Zoo And Director To Be Prosecuted Following Death Of Keeper

South Lakes Safari Zoo and its Director, David Gill, are to be prosecuted for breaches of health and safety law after a zoo keeper was fatally injured by a Sumatran tiger.

Sarah McClay (24) died at the zoo in Dalton-in-Furness, south Cumbria on 24 May, 2013.

Barrow Borough Council have announced a prosecution to be taken against the zoo and and its director for the death of Ms McClay, alongside another prosecution for alleged breaches of health and safety law following an incident in July 2014 when a zoo keeper fell from a ladder whilst preparing to feed big cats, and a further prosecution for an alleged failure to comply with two improvement notices, served by Barrow Borough Council.

The initial court date has been set for 27 August 2015 at Barrow Magistrates' Court.

Zookeeper Injured In An Incident 'Involving A Rhino'
An investigation has been launched after a zookeeper at Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire was found in an enclosure with serious injuries. The man, said to be in his 50s, is understood to have been found by colleagues. He was discovered "in water", having suffered injuries to his chest, abdomen and pelvis following an "incident involving a rhino".

Menezes family begins court battle
The family of Jean Charles de Menezes is challenging the High Court decision not to prosecute any individual officers over his killing. The 27-year-old Brazilian was shot eight times in Stockwell station in south London on July 22 last year, after being mistaken for a potential suicide bomber.

38 Charged In 'Cash For Crash' Fraud
Thirty-eight people have been charged in connection with a 'cash for crash' insurance fraud scheme in Cumbria. The charges came following an investigation by Cumbria Police and consultation with the CPS. Police said that the offences took place between 2010 and 2014.

Mercy Killing 'Time Waster' Gosling Charged
BBC presenter Ray Gosling is to be charged with wasting police time over claims that he killed his terminally ill gay lover. Mr Gosling, 71, from Nottingham, is to be charged over claims made in an interview with Bill Turnbull on BBC Breakfast in February that he smothered the man, who was dying of Aids.

Man jailed for monkey theft
A man has been jailed for 12 months for stealing a rare squirrel monkey from Chessington World of Adventures in Surrey. Marlon Brown, 23, was part of a group that stole Spongebob, an endangered Bolivian squirrel monkey, from the monkey enclosure at the theme park last July. He had denied stealing Spongebob but his DNA was found in the cage.
