Princess Royal opens 9/11 remembrance garden

Princess Anne has opened a Memorial Garden in Grosvenor Gardens in London today to the victims of September 11, 2001.

Among those attending the dedication ceremony was American Ambassador William Farish, and some of the families and friends of those killed.

Mr Farish said that the garden was a fitting site for a memorial to those killed.

A plaque was unveiled at the heart of the garden, which is nearby to the American Embassy and became a place of relative quiet for mourners in the days after the attack.

A girder taken from the ground zero site in New York has been placed in the garden. Considered too distressing to be placed on display, it is buried underneath the memorial plaque dedicating the garden to 2,900 victims of September 11 terrorist attack on Washington and the World Trade Centre in New York where 67 Britons lost their lives.

Earlier this week US President George Bush proclaimed September 11, this year as ‘Patriot Day’ and said the United States "will not tire, will not falter, and will not fail in fighting for the safety and security of the American people and a world free from terrorism.

“We will continue to bring our enemies to justice or bring justice to them. This Patriot Day, we hold steady to this task."
