Traceable Forensic Liquid Leads To Eight Arrests
Eight people have been charged with theft since the launch of a traceable forensic liquid trial in Salford and Trafford.
Police have been using the traceable liquid in targeted areas in an effort to reduce burglary. It is understood that goods marked with the liquid leave a traceable mark on the thief, which police can then check for.
The same liquid can also be used as a spray to mark the skin and clothing of an offender which allows them to be connected to a specific crime.
Superintendent Mark Kenny from Greater Manchester Police’s (GMP) Salford Division said: "We are working with partners to help reduce crime in these areas and hope that this initiative will help to drive down criminality.
"Unfortunately there are people out there who believe that it is acceptable to steal the property of others. We want to send out a strong message to would-be offenders that this is simply not the case and we will find them and bring them to justice."
Police have also produced a number of tips to help protect your home against thieves.
• Timers can be set to switch lights on when it goes dark and you are out of the house. They can also be used to switch other electrical devices on including radios and set an alarm when leaving the house
• Always lock doors and windows when you are in the house and don’t leave open windows and doors unattended during the winter months
• Make sure your valuables including computers, phones and tablets are out of sight from windows. Photograph your jewellery and other expensive items and register them on immobilise.com, a free database which allows property to be traced back to its original owner should it be stolen
• Homeowners should also consider investing in a safe which can be placed in a secure part of the home and bolted to the floor so it cannot be easily removed
• Never leave spare keys hidden outside as burglars often know all the usual hiding places, wheelie bins can also be used as a climbing aid for burglars so try to secure them away from windows when they’re not in use
• Forensic marking kits to make property traceable
