Business Secretary Announces New Apprenticeship Scheme
The Government is to introduce a new apprenticeship scheme in association with the UK's fastest-growing companies.
The new scheme will place apprentices in small and medium companies quoted on AIM, London Stock Exchange’s (LSE) growth market for ambitious small and medium businesses.
Speaking at the LSE on Wednesday night for AIM's 20th anniversary, business secretary, Sajid Javid, said the new scheme would, "bring together innovative new companies that are the future of British business, and the hardworking young apprentices who are the future of the British workforce."
The London Stock Exchange Group Foundation has committed an initial £20,000 to underwrite the cost of administering the scheme, with additional funds raised at the event last night. The scheme will be run by the educational charity City Gateway. More than 850 companies from across the country are quoted on AIM, and the scheme will work to highlight the opportunities they offer to young people.
Business Secretary Sajid Javid said: "World class apprenticeships are essential to support our employers and give hope and opportunity to young people. We are committed to 3 million new apprenticeship starts in this Parliament, and AIM’s Apprenticeship scheme is exactly the kind of project that will help make that vision a reality."

Scrappage Scheme Boosts Car Sales
More than 35,000 new cars have been ordered through the UK's scrappage scheme, since it was introduced, new figures have revealed. This equates to one scrappage scheme order out of every five new car orders in this period. Gordon Brown welcomed three new car buyers that had benefited from the scheme at Downing Street this morning.

Trawlermen Consultation Launched
The Government today launched a consultation on its new scheme to compensate trawlermen who lost their livelihoods following the 1970s 'Cod Wars'. The consultation runs until 22 May. The Government intends to open the new scheme to applications in the summer.
