Knife Amnesty Launched In London

A month-long knife amnesty has been launched in Haringey in an ongoing crack down on knife crime.

The amnesty begins today (Wednesday) and will run until Friday 09 July. Two 'weapon bins' will be made available for anyone to dispose of a knife or similar sharp weapon without being prosecuted for being in possession of them. The bins will be outside Tottenham Police Station, High Road, N17 and Wood Green Police Station, High Road, N22.

A similar initiative in Hackney last year concluded with 140 weapons being surrendered to police.

Acting Sergeant Roberto Vacca said: "The knife amnesty initiative seeks to deter individuals from committing serious offences. The presence of these two weapons bins in prominent locations within the borough will give the opportunity for those who carry knives to dispose of them without fear of prosecution (as long as they haven't already been used in the commission of an offence).

"Aside from the obvious gain from physically removing these dangerous weapons from our streets, it is important that the initiative changes attitudes within our community to make Haringey a safer place for everyone who lives and works there."
