Alton Towers Remains Closed Following Accident
Alton Towers remains closed today, 3 June, following an incident on one of its attractions on Tuesday.
At around 2pm yesterday, two carriages crashed on a low section of track on the theme park's The Smiler rollercoaster. Sixteen passengers were on the ride at the time, some of which were trapped for four-and-a-half hours. It is understood two men, aged 18 and 27, a girl, aged 17, and another 19-year-old woman suffered serious injuries. After being freed from the carriage, they were airlifted to major trauma centres.
The remaining passengers – six women and six men – suffered less serious injuries. They were released one at a time over a four-hour period and received a further assessment of their condition. One of the 12, a man in his 20s, sustained neck and abdominal injuries and was taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital for treatment.
It is understood all 16 passengers were in one carriage, which collided with a stationary unoccupied carriage. On Tuesday, visitors at the theme park took to social media to say that the ride had broken down earlier in the day.
In a statement on its website, Alton Towers confirmed that the park would remain closed today (3 June), following the "dreadful incident". It added that those with pre-booked tickets, or those who arrive at the theme park, would have the option to have their tickets revalidated for an alternative date, or a full refund.
