London man’s boat drifts into shipping lanes
A major search launched last night by Solent Coastguard ended when a 50-year-old Londoner reported missing in his aluminium kit-boat was found drifting toward shipping lanes.
It is understood that the man set out on his boat yesterday with the intention of sailing to Alderney in the Channel Islands. However, the alarm was raised when his wife called the Coastguard at around 8.00 pm to report that he had not returned.
A major search operation commenced and Solent Coastguard requested the assistance of the French Coastguard as well as the Channel Islands authorities.
They conducted searches of nearby harbours and marinas. In addition, Yarmouth and Poole Lifeboats were requested to launch and seven Coastguard teams from the Isle of Wight and to the west of Portsmouth harbour began a shoreline search.
At 1.00 am the boat - with the man aboard - was spotted drifting toward busy shipping lanes with steering failure. He was subsequently towed into Yarmouth by the Yarmouth lifeboat.
Solent Coastguard Watch Manager, Colin Griffiths, praised the “excellent co-operation” received from colleagues in France and the Channel Islands.
