Coastguard locate missing woman after air-sea search

A 42-year-old woman missing at sea since yesterday morning was airlifted to safety last night by an RAF helicopter five miles off the Isle of Man.

Liverpool Coastguard had been co-ordinating the search which centred on an area south of the Isle of Man. An Irish Coastguard helicopter equipped with forward looking infra-red detection equipment eventually located the woman in the early hours of this morning, five miles west south west of Peel on the Isle of Man.

The helicopter crew alerted lifeboats and other helicopters in the area and the woman was winched to safety at around 12.45 am this morning.

The search for the 42 year old woman, who was last seen at 9.30 am this morning, began last night and involved two helicopters, four lifeboats and two Coastguard Rescue Teams.

Sue Todd, Liverpool Coastguard Watch Manager said: "We are absolutely delighted with the outcome of this search. The woman appears to be in good health but is being taken to hospital for a check up. This has been another example of the UK and Irish Coastguard working closely together and the Irish Coastguard helicopter did particularly excellent work this evening, as did all of the resources involved."

The woman had set out from Port Erin on the Isle of Man in an open boat.

After she failed to return from her trip the Coastguard were informed and a search of the area began.
