An investigation into a fire in Walton-on-the-Naze has found that "sunlight reflecting on a magnifying mirror" caused the blaze.
No one was injured in the fire on 02 May, but the flat and all of the possessions of the people living there were completely destroyed.
Assistant divisional officer Simon Dedman said: "This incident is unusual but by no means the only time a fire has started like this. It was a two-sided mirror with one side magnified and that was the side facing the sun."
