New 'Safe Spots' Domestic Abuse Campaign Launches
A new campaign has been launched in an effort to tackle domestic abuse and to offer victims help and support.
The new 'Safe Spots' campaign has been launched in Wythenshawe, and are described as "places in the community which have staff available who can sign-post victims of abuse towards services that can safely help them out of their situation".
It is understood that the scheme is being led by local women – some of whom have experienced domestic abuse – who have negotiated with police, partner agencies and local businesses to set up and support the safe spots.
Volunteers from local businesses have been trained by Woman's Aid and Independent Choices.
Inspector Luke Breakspear said: "I was invited to meet with the volunteers and we discussed their views of domestic abuse. It was highlighted that victims wouldn’t want to be seen going in to a police station or other statutory premises, for fear of being further abused by perpetrators or, having decisions made for them, by well-meaning officers or officials.
"By supporting this project I hope that local victims will see that we do want to help them and will do what we can to support them."
