IPCC Investigate Former Met Police Chief

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has launched an investigation into former Metropolitan Police Chief Lord Stevens.

It is understood that the investigation will focus on information Lord Steven's presented to the 1998 Macpherson inquiry into the Met's handling of the Stephen Lawrence murder case.

The IPCC said the Met referred Lord Stevens to them following a public complaint.

The Macpherson Inquiry was launched amid concerns over the force's investigation of teenager Stephen Lawrence, who was stabbed to death in April 1993 in an unprovoked attack by a gang of white youths.

Lord Stevens was Deputy Commissioner of the Met from 1998 to 200, while the report was being compiled.
