Lincoln Castle Reopens Following Refurb
Lincoln Castle has reopened following a £22m restoration project.
The work involved the construction of a vault which will house one of the original copies of the Magna Carta and Charter of the Forest – the only place where they can be viewed together.
A Medieval Wall Walk has also been completed and offers views of the city, while the Victorian Prison, which had been closed to the public for decades, has been reopened. Archaeological discoveries made during the works, including a Saxon sarcophagus, or stone coffin, will also be highlighted, while a new castle shop and café will offer souvenirs, gifts and refreshments for visitors.
The project has taken four years to complete, with the castle being completely closed to the public for the last three months to allow for the final refurbishments to be made. The redevelopment has been made possible due to funding from the county council, Heritage Lottery Fund, European Regional Development Fund, David Ross Foundation, Garfield Weston Foundation and private donations.
