Emigrating Suffolk Councillor Formally Asked To Stand Down

The leader of Suffolk County Council has formally asked an emigrating councillor to resign his position.

Councillor Brian Riley is moving from Hadleigh in Suffolk to Raleigh, North Carolina, but had previously announced that he had no plans to give up his role at the council.

It is understood that councillors are only required to attended one meeting every six months in order to be entitled to their £10,273.74 members' allowance.

Mr Riley has already been thrown out of the ruling Conservative group and council leader Mark Bee, has now confirmed that he has officially asked him to stand down.

It is understood that Mr Riley has not yet made any further comment on the matter.

A councillor planning to move to America has refused to stand down, claiming that he can continue to do his job despite no longer living in the UK. Conservative county councillor for Hadleigh in Suffolk, Brian Riley, is planning to move to North Carolina, but is understood to have claimed that he can continue to do his job via email and Skype.

Mayor Questioned Over Alleged Corruption
An elected mayor has been arrested in connection with a police inquiry into alleged corruption, it has emerged. Mark Meredith, 42, Stoke-on-Trent - who was elected in May 2005 - was detained by police on suspicion of misconduct in a public office and complicity in corruption while in public office.

Council Bans Smokers From Fostering
Smokers in a London borough council are to be banned from fostering children, under radical new policies. Redbridge Council's cabinet agreed on Tuesday night to place the ban on carers who smoke, unless they are "exceptional circumstances".
