Aldi To Create Over 400 Jobs In Wales
More than 400 jobs are to be created in Wales by supermarket chain Aldi, it has been announced.
The retailer has confirmed it will invest £59.5m to construct a new regional distribution centre and offices in Cardiff. The project is being supported by the Welsh Government.
The investment in the new centre could also see up to 10 new stores opening throughout the region over the next five years, to potentially create a further 500 jobs.
The new centre, located in Wentloog, will supply stores in South Wales and the South West of England, creating 414 jobs. The roles range from graduate level to senior management and operational roles.
The deal was secured with a £4.5m grant from the Welsh government.
The funding will go towards preparing the land for construction. It has been said that due to unforeseen ground conditions, as well as hydrological and ecological constraints, the construction of the new centre would not have been viable without funding support, and alternative sites in England would have been considered instead.
Work has now commenced on the 40,000 sq m centre at the Capital Business Park in Wentloog. When completed, it will include a 3,000 sq m office complex over two floors, 250 car parking spaces, loading bays, gatehouse and access roads. The centre will be a regional hub for the delivery, storage and distribution of products to stores, and will house management and support staff.
It is anticipated the centre will be fully operational in early 2017.
Welcoming the investment, Economy Minister Edwina Hart, said: "Support from the Welsh Government is not only helping to create more than 400 jobs – but it is also opening up wider supply chain opportunities for food and beverage suppliers and indirectly supporting jobs in the construction sector.
"The new centre will offer a wide range of employment opportunities for people in Cardiff, neighbouring areas and the South Wales Valleys."
A spokesperson from Aldi added: "We are delighted to have the support of the Welsh Government and to be creating over 400 new jobs in Cardiff, underpinning Aldi's commitment to Wales."
