Suffolk Councillor Wants To Keep Job Despite Emigration Plans
A councillor planning to move to America has refused to stand down, claiming that he can continue to do his job despite no longer living in the UK.
Conservative county councillor for Hadleigh in Suffolk, Brian Riley, is planning to move to North Carolina, but is understood to have claimed that he can continue to do his job via email and Skype.
According to a report by the East Anglian Daily Times, council leader, Mark Bee, said that Mr Riley's refusal to stand down "beggars belief".
It is understood Mr Riley had been suspended by the council's Conservation group and is being urged to resign from his position to allow a by-election to be held alongside the general election in May.
However, Mr Riley cannot be forced to resign, as he is only required by law to attend one council meeting every six months.
