US President restates pledge to fight 'global terrorism'
Following the death of the 139th US soldier in post-war Iraq yesterday, President George W Bush has vowed to continue the war against "global terrorism".
Mr Bush said that the US had scored a number of successes – saying that al Qaeda were no longer using Afghanistan as a "haven", and that Saddam Hussein's "brutal and terrorist-friendly regime" had been swept away.
However, he acknowledged that Iraq remained a "dangerous place" where Saddam remnants, anti-Western foreign fighters, and "criminals" continued to attack US and coalition forces.
"The more progress we make in Iraq, the more desperate the terrorists will become," Mr Bush added.
The president said that terrorists "will not intimidate the civilized world into backing off" as acquiescence would only invite additional attacks.
Recent US-coalition military operations in Iraq have included more than 200 raids, which have led to the detention of than 1,100 people. Of the former regime heads on the "55" most- wanted card list, 42 have now been captured or killed, said Mr Bush.
Since May 1, when major combat operations in Iraq were declared ended, the US claims to have seized more than 8,200 tons of ammunition, thousands of AK-47s, rocket-propelled grenades and other weapons.

President George Bush has made a surprise visit to US troops stationed in Iraq for impromptu Thanksgiving celebrations. Coalition administrator Paul Bremer was finishing a speech to 600 troops at the start of the traditional Thanksgiving dinner, when Mr Bush arrived for a whirlwind 2½-hour visit.

14,000 police officers swamp London for Bush visit
Up to 14,000 officers are expected to be on duty in London during President Bush's three-day state visit – the first by a US president since Woodrow Wilson in 1918. The UK security cordon will also be supplemented by hundreds of US secret service agents when the president arrives tomorrow morning.

US Senate approves $87bn for Iraq and Afghan campaigns
The US president has today welcomed the Senate's assent to release around $87 billion in funding which will be channelled into the military and Iraqi and Afghani rebuilding programmes. The bulk of the money will be handed over to the US military – which benefits to the tune of £63 billion.

Body found in search for missing aircraft
A body has been found along with the wreckage of a light aircraft belonging to a couple from Cowbridge. A search will continue today for a second person known to have been on board the aircraft which was last spotted on radar at around 13.30 BST on Sunday.

Plans passed for £47m link road through valley
Despite a concerted campaign by environmentalists, plans to build a controversial £47 million link road in southern England have been passed. Friends of the Earth said that the Bexhill to Hastings road through the scenic Combe Haven Valley in East Sussex would on the contrary add to congestion and increase pollution.
