Council Wants Locals To Take Over Toilet Cleaning

North Devon Council are hoping to save money by asking locals to clean public toilets in their areas.

The council said it costs £320,000 a year to maintain its 27 facilities, and wants to find a "more economical way of providing the service".

It hopes that parish councils and community groups will take over the upkeep of the facilities in return for a grant.

'World's Oldest Barmaid' Dies Aged 100

A woman, believed to be the world's oldest barmaid, has died aged 100.

Dolly Saville had worked at the Red Lion Hotel in Wendover for 75 years, pulling her first pint before the outbreak of World War Two.

Having celebrated her 100th birthday at the pub, she reportedly said that working kept her feeling young.

North Wales Paper Mill Badly Damaged In Major Fire

North Wales Fire and Rescue are at the scene of a fire at a Oakenholt Paper Mill in Flintshire.

The fire is believed to have been brought under control, however fire crews remain on site to ensure there are no secondary fires.

There have been no reports of any injuries.

Heroic Tyne Firemen Honoured
Two Tyne and Wear firefighters are to be recognised for their bravery at a special ceremony today. Andrew Nelson and Allan Richardson will be presented with the Chief Fire Officer's Commendations for brave and meritorious conduct after saving a man's life. The men took part in a dramatic rescue in the early hours of 4 February.

Firefighters launch four-day strike
More than 1,000 firefighters across Merseyside have begun a four-day strike in protest over planned job cuts. Another four-day stoppage is scheduled to begin two hours after the first one ends.

Suspicious Glasgow Car Fires
Detectives in Glasgow's East End are investigating a spate of vehicle fire attacks in the city yesterday. Shortly after 3.30am police were called to a report of a vehicle fire in Ashvale Crescent, Glasgow. Upon arrival police were advised by Strathclyde Fire Service that four vehicles had been damaged by fire.

Chief Fire Officer Resigns Over Child Porn Arrest
A top fire officer for the West Midlands Fire Service has resigned after he was arrested on suspicion of making indecent images of children. West Midlands Police arrested Frank Sheehan, 55, yesterday at his home in Sutton Coldfield.

15 Fire Engines Tackle Blaze At Paper Mill
More than 15 fire engines tackled a fire overnight at the Smurfit Kappa recycling plant. Some 10,000 tonnes of cardboard are on fire at the paper mill on Mount Street in Nechells, which recycles packaging. It is understood that no-one was injured in the firs, which broke out around 22:00 on Wednesday night.
