Glass Jar Blamed For House Fire
A jar of Nutella has been found to have been the cause of a fire that destroyed a family's home and killed their pet dog.
Investigators believe that low winter sunlight refracted by the glass jar, which was on the windowsill of a child's bedroom, sparked a fire in Twickenham, south-west London.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) said that it is believed the jar magnified the suns rays onto blinds, which subsequently caught fire.
It is understood the family's pet Jack Russell, Chilli, was inside the house when the fire started.
LFB urged others to check that window ledges were clear of any glass or crystal that could lead to "a potentially life changing blaze".

Heroic Tyne Firemen Honoured
Two Tyne and Wear firefighters are to be recognised for their bravery at a special ceremony today. Andrew Nelson and Allan Richardson will be presented with the Chief Fire Officer's Commendations for brave and meritorious conduct after saving a man's life. The men took part in a dramatic rescue in the early hours of 4 February.

Firefighters launch four-day strike
More than 1,000 firefighters across Merseyside have begun a four-day strike in protest over planned job cuts. Another four-day stoppage is scheduled to begin two hours after the first one ends.

Suspicious Glasgow Car Fires
Detectives in Glasgow's East End are investigating a spate of vehicle fire attacks in the city yesterday. Shortly after 3.30am police were called to a report of a vehicle fire in Ashvale Crescent, Glasgow. Upon arrival police were advised by Strathclyde Fire Service that four vehicles had been damaged by fire.

A fresh appeal for information has been issued 20 years after the murder of a Walthamstow school teacher. Joy Hewer was sexually assaulted and stabbed in an attack at her flat in Walthamstow on Tuesday, 17 October 1995. No one has ever been charged with her murder.
