Welsh Council Merger Plan Dropped

Wales Public Services Minister, Leighton Andrews, has rejected a voluntary merger plan by six Welsh councils.

Following a recommendation by the Williams Commission that Wales 22 councils should be cut by half, six councils had volunteered to merge.

Blaenau Gwent and Torfaen, Bridgend and the Vale of Glamorgan, and Conwy and Denbighshire had expressed interest in mergers, after Minister Andrews appealed to councils to consider the plan.

However, the BBC have reported that Mr Andrews has scrapped the merger plan, stating he had not been "persuaded" if they would "meet the criteria".
