ONS Crime Figures At All Time Low

The latest crime figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) have revealed an 11% fall in the year to September 2014.

The drop brings the figures to their lowest level since the Crime Survey in England and Wales began in 1981.

The survey looks at a broad range of victim-based crimes, including those that don't come to the attention of the police. It found a decrease for "almost all crime types", including vehicle-related theft and criminal damage (both falling by 15%) and other household theft (down 9%).

The ONS figures clash with official police figures however, which show no overall change from the previous year. Police figures show 3.7m offences in the year ending September 2014.
