Author Ruth Rendell In Critical Condition Following Stroke

Author Ruth Rendell is being treated in hospital after suffering a stroke, her publisher has confirmed.

The 84-year-old bestselling crime writer is said to be a stable but critical condition following a "serious stroke" on 07 January.

Baroness Rendell also has a seat in the House Of Lords as a Labour peer.

A statement from Hutchinson - Penguin Random House said: "Our thoughts are with Ruth and her family at this difficult time.

"Her son, Simon Rendell, is with her and thanks everyone for their concern.

"The family request privacy while the doctors assess the best course of treatment."

Blue Peter Launch 'Young Spies' Competition

Children between the ages of eight and 14 will be offered the chance to become a 'CBBC Intelligence Officer' as part of a competition being run by Blue Peter and M15.

Eight potential "young spies" will be given the chance to attend a spy school as part of a Blue Peter programme for CBBC.

The competition winners will also be given an exclusive tour of Thomas House, the British security service's London HQ, marking the first time television cameras have been allowed into the building.

Viewers can apply by downloading an application form from the Blue Peter website and returning it by 2 February.

Man Sells Place On Honeymoon Trip For £8,000

A man has auctioned off a place on his honeymoon for £8,000.

32-year-old John Whitbread's wedding fell through just six weeks before the date, with a two-week trip to the Dominican Republic already booked as a honeymoon.

Mr Whitbread decided to auction off the spare ticket, seeking a woman to come on the trip, which is due to take place in February.

A woman, whose identity has not been revealed, has paid £8,000 to join John on the trip.

It is understood that £1,000 of the money will be used as spending money, £50 will be spent changing the name on travel documents, and the rest will be donated to charity.

'Blue Peter' apologises over 'fake' competition win
The BBC has issued an apology after it was revealed that the results of a competition on children's programme 'Blue Peter' were faked. The BBC confirmed that a viewer contacted it last week who raised questions about a competition on the show on November 27 last year.

Magic Radio has recruited a new presenter. Former Blue Peter host Tim Vincent has joined the radio team to present Secret Songs. The former flagship kids' show co-presenter is to cover for Kim Wilde for three weeks from August 16 in the Sunday 10am to 2pm slot.

UK Economy Improving, But Growth Still Slow
The UK economy has shown a few signs of improvement in the first three months of this year, the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has said. The BCC's new Quarterly Economic Survey (QES) released today shows encouraging results for Q1 2012, with most balances recording increases on the last quarter.

The Home Secretary and law chiefs have called on judges and magistrates to jail only the most dangerous and persistent criminals. John Reid, Lord Chancellor Lord Falconer and Attorney General Lord Goldsmith have sent a letter to judges and magistrates in a bid to ease the pressure on Britain's overcrowded hails.

Over 8,000 Homes Without Water After Mains Burst In Bristol
Up to 8,000 homes have been left without water after a mains water pipe burst near Bristol. It is understood that a 30 inch water main ruptured in Kingswood on Thursday afternoon, leaving thousands of residents without water and forcing the closure of 18 schools in the area. Bristol Water are supplying water to residents via tankers.
