Explosion devastates UN compound in Baghdad

Three people have been killed and scores more injured following a car bomb attack on the UN Headquarters in Baghdad today.

The US Military say the explosion was potentially the work of a suicide bomber, and that their forces are engaged in the search for survivors who may be buried in the rubble.

It is believed that the senior UN representative to Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello, remains trapped in the rubble. Sergio Vieira de Mello, who is in Iraq on a four-month leave of absence from his role as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, was sent as Kofi Annan's Special Representative at the end of May.

As details continue to emerge, speculation over the culprits' identity will focus on Saddam loyalists or Islamic Militants.

There are some 300 UN personnel based in Baghdad and 646 in Iraq altogether.
