Extra £21m ploughed into deprived communities funding

A £21 million expansion of the government's drive to revitalise some of our most deprived communities, was announced today by the Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott.

Up to £19 million will extend the funding period for 1,000 street wardens, who are already working successfully in vulnerable communities to cut crime and improve the environment.

A further £2 million will increase the number of neighbourhood management schemes from 20 to 30. These one-stop 'pathfinders' improve key services and quality of life for residents by joining up the efforts of the public, private, community and voluntary sectors. The existing management schemes are already helping to solve local problems with crime, unemployment, housing, health and the environment.

The extension of these schemes will allow service providers to find out 'what works', and transfer these successes into mainstream public services.

Speaking during a visit to Hastings, where wardens and neighbourhood management are already working closely together to renew the area, Mr Prescott said: "Making neighbourhoods clean and safe benefits everybody. Already, we can see the impact that wardens and neighbourhood management have in helping residents to revitalise their neighbourhoods and reclaim their streets."

"This £21 million will help us to achieve our aim that nobody should be disadvantaged by where they live."

Across the country, people living in deprived areas are benefiting from £77 million already invested in wardens and neighbourhood management, as part of a £3.5 billion national regeneration strategy.
