Pre-Pay Gas Customers Overcharged By Faulty Meters
More than a million gas meters have been misreading the amount of gas used and overcharging pre-pay customers since around 2007.
Industry body, Energy UK, has confirmed that pre-payment customers have been overcharged for gas – some by around 25p for each top-up – due to faulty meters.
They said the meters were not properly calibrated when they were installed.
Energy UK said ffected customers will be automatically refunded any overcharge, with payment cards updated when they top-up.
A company spokesperson "apologised unreservedly to customers".

British Gas have announced that it is making a new investment of £37 million in support for its vulnerable customers. Each customer on British Gas' Essentials social tariff will receive £50 as a credit on their winter bill. Prepayment customers will receive the credit direct to their meter.

New research by Consumer Focus shows that energy customers are being overcharged by a combined £1.66 billion this year (£74 per household), as declining wholesale costs have not been fully passed on by suppliers. Analysis shows that current gas prices should be at least 7.4% cheaper, and electricity bills a minimum of 3.

E.On Makes £1.7m Compensation Deal
Energy company E.On has agreed to pay £1.7m in compensation, including interest, to overcharged customers. E.On failed to allow customers 94,000 a 30-day window to switch supplier after a price rise. A total of £1.4m is being paid directly to overcharged exit fee customers. The average rebate is valued at £14.83 each.

Illegal Gas Fitter Sentenced
A man who falsely claimed to be a registered gas engineer has been sentenced for illegally installing gas appliances at addresses in York. Bennett Morley of Cherry Paddock, Haxby, York, was prosecuted by The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for five offences under Gas Safety legislation after complaints by householders.

Energy regulator Ofgem has launched Energy Best Deal, a campaign to empower low income customers with the information to help them make the most of the energy market.
