Ofcom To Investigate Premier League Over TV Rights

How the Premier League sells live TV rights for football matches is to be investigated by the regulator, Ofcom, following a complaint by Virgin Media.

Virgin has complained that current arrangements "for the collective selling of live UK television rights by the Premier League for matches played by its member clubs is in breach of competition law".

It is understood Ofcom will investigate, using the terms of the Competition Act, if there are reasonable grounds for suspecting an agreement is being used to prevent, restrict or distort competition.

Currently BT and BSkyB share the rights to broadcast Premier League matches, and will continue to do so until 2016.

Virgin Media has made its complaint as the football organisation prepares to start the bidding process for broadcast rights from 2016 onwards.
