Calls Made For Prisoner Monitoring Review After Hostel Deaths
An MP has called for a review on the sentencing procedure and monitoring of prisoners in Wales following the death of a 22-year-old woman who was attacked at a hostel for released prisoners.
Ms Cerys Marie Yemm died from injuries sustained when she was attacked by 34-year-old Matthew Williams at a hostel in Argoed in Caerphilly county.
According to police, cannibalism was involved in the Ms Yemm's death.
Mr Williams also died following the attack. Details of his death have not been confirmed but it is known that police shot him with a Taser stun gun during the arrest. He later became unresponsive and despite the efforts of officers to revive him, was pronounced dead.
Amid claims that the attack could have been prevented, Elfyn Llwyd MP has called for changes to the monitoring of prisoners after release.
It is claimed that Mr Williams, diagnosed at 16 with paranoid schizophrenia, was not prescribed any medication upon leaving jail, with his mother adding that he should not have been placed at the hostel, but sectioned under the mental health act.
