Accountant fined over fraudulant tax return
An accountant has been fined after he was found guilty of defrauding the Inland Revenue.
Certified Accountant Michael Keith Graham, a 57-year-old married man from Riverside Walk, Ilkley, Yorkshire, was yesterday found guilty at Leeds Crown Court of defrauding the Inland Revenue. He was fined £5,000 and ordered to pay prosecution costs of £15,000 in addition to paying all defence costs.
Graham claimed that he had disposed of his Mercedes motorcar for £50,000 and indicated that during the same year he bought another Mercedes for £50,000. Revenue investigations revealed that Graham neither bought nor sold any car during that year and had therefore claimed allowances to which he was not entitled. The amount being defrauded was £16,502.
The court agreed with the prosecution that the defendant had "wilfully and deliberately made a fraudulent claim" in the full knowledge that what he was doing was wrong.

Reverend Canon Dr Giles Fraser had been vocal in his support of the Occupy the London Stock Exchange movement, telling police they were "not needed" when officers prepared a barricade.

Man Jailed For Defrauding His Grandmother Of More Than £30,000
A 29-year-old man has been jailed for defrauding his grandmother while she was being treated in hospital. Daniel Westbury, of Keyes Avenue, Chatham, was sentenced to 20 months in jail for stealing more than £30,000 from his grandmother, who had asked him to look after her finances while she recovered from a fall.

Surprise Royal Visit To Flood-Hit Village
Princes William and Harry have made a surprise visit to the flood-hit village of Datchet in Berkshire, to help colleagues from the Armed Forces brace flood defences. Dressed in waterproofs and wellington boots they worked from around 6am helping residents protect their properties with sandbags.
