End is near for 192 as switchover looms

The communications watchdog Oftel today warned all callers to directory enquiries that the new 118 numbers will come into effect on August 24.

The eight-month period of parallel running of 192 and the new 118 numbers will end on August 24, and from this date it will no longer be possible to access directory enquiry services on 192. Callers to 192 from a BT line and most other networks will hear a recorded message informing them of the changes and giving a freephone number for information on an appropriate 118 directory enquiry service.

The new directory enquiries operators will provide a choice of new services at a range of prices, some of which are half the price of existing 192 services.

Oftel's latest research shows that over 80% of consumers are aware that there are a range of new numbers for directory enquiries, and up to 30% of people dialling directory enquiries are already using the new numbers.

Peter Waller, Deputy Director General of Telecommunications, said: "The opening up of the directory enquiries market means that the consumer is no longer forced to use the service provided by their network operator whether or not they are happy with the level of service and the price."

BT has said that it is concerned that users could become confused during the changeover.

BT directories chief executive Paul Elliott said: "Our research shows around 70% of people are still quoting 192 as the number to call for directory enquiries. We expect most people to switch at the last possible moment and this is bound to lead to confusion and irritation, as callers will have to make at least three phone calls before they get the number they want."

Customers who do not want to pay can go online to 118500.com where they get directory enquiries services and other classified information free of charge.

So far 40 companies have been granted permission to operate directory enquiries services, with a range of features such as call completion and classified services.
