US soldier killed in Baghdad explosion
A US soldier has been killed and two others injured following a bomb attack in the Iraqi capital Baghdad yesterday.
The soldier, from the 4th Infantry Division, was killed when an improvised device exploded near the Ba’qubah police station at around 9:45pm.
The three soldiers were evacuated to the 21st Combat Support Hospital for treatment where one soldier subsequently died of wounds received.
The environment in Iraq is not only hazardous in terms of civil unrest but the oppressive heat has also been affected the ability of coalition troops to operate effectively on the ground.
The heat in some parts of Iraq – the temperature gauge has topped 55°C in recent days – has also claimed lives. A soldier from the 3rd Corps Support Command died from apparent heat exhaustion on Saturday while riding in a convoy north of Ad Diwaniyah.
The soldier was evacuated to a nearby medical facility, where he was pronounced dead. The incident is under investigation.
