Convict told fork out £2m or face 10 more years in jail
Customs at Heathrow airport have applied for a £2 million confiscation order – the largest ever requested –at Isleworth Crown Court yesterday.
Peter Emu, who was jailed for 22 years in November 2002 for drugs and money laundering offences, will now have to pay over the amount within two years – or face a further 10 years in jail.
Carole Upshall, Regional Investigation Manager, said: "This sends a clear message to those who seek to get involved in and profit from international drug trafficking that the penalties are high. Whilst the prison sentence is a deterrent, individuals should be aware that Customs & Excise will seek to recover all assets accrued as a result of illegal activity."
Peter Emu (44), a Nigerian passport holder, was arrested on May 12 2002 at Heathrow Airport prior to boarding a flight to Lagos, Nigeria. His luggage was found to contain US$500,750. As a result he was arrested on suspicion of laundering the proceeds of drug trafficking.
On the November 12 2002, at the end of the prosecution case at Isleworth Crown Court, the defendant pleaded guilty to the following charges three charges related to cocaine possession, supply of cocaine, and money laundering. He was sentenced to 22 years in prison.
The court detemined that Mr Emu had assets of £2,000,000 and a confiscation order made in the sum of £2,000,000 with a 10-year period in default and two years to repay.
