Operation under way to deal with 4,000lb WWII bomb

Thames Coastguard is currently co-ordinating the safe disposal of what is thought to be an old Second World War bomb.

The 4,000lb bomb was discovered dragging in the nets of a trawler yesterday afternoon a mile off West Cliff on Sea.

The Essex Police are ensuring public safety on land where the Coastguard are dealing with the marine public safety and issuing radio broadcasts advising craft to keep clear of the area.

Port of London Authority is issuing similar warnings for commercial shipping. A police launch is instructing small craft to keep clear of the area.

The Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit will tow the bomb six miles east to the MoD range at Maplin Sands where it will then be made safe later today.
