Tesco Abandon Margate Store After Five Year Fight

After years spent trying to secure planning permission, Tesco has abandoned its plan to open a supermarket on Margate seafront.

The supermarket giant has tried for five years to get planning approval for a store to be located in the car park of Arlington House tower block, next to Dreamland theme park, with the tower block being renovated as part of the project.

Permission was finally granted in June 2013, however, Tesco has now said that it no longer plans to build the store due to changes in shopping habits.

It is understood that Tesco is reducing the number of large stores it opens as a result of changing customer shopping habits.
