Lib Dems Confirm Mike Hancock Resignation

The Liberal Democrats have confirmed that Portsmouth South MP Mike Hancock has resigned from the party.

It is understood that the MP had submitted his resignation earlier this week, but it was confirmed on Thursday in response to questions posed by the Independent newspaper.

In 2010 Mr Hancock had faced accusations of sexually assaulting a constituent, but no charges were brought.

However, earlier this year Mr Hancock agreed a confidential settlement in a civil action that was subsequently dropped. Under the conditions, he was required to issue an apology for an "inappropriate and unprofessional friendship".

It is understood that Mr Hancock's resignation comes ahead of the launch of internal party disciplinary hearing.
