Alice Gross Police Reveal Details Of Suspect

Police investigating the disappearance of 14-year-old Alice Gross have revealed that a 41-year-old man they are also searching for has previously been convicted of murder.

Police issued an appeal on Wednesday for Arnis Zalkalns, a Latvian builder who they said travelled to work along the same route known to have been taken by Alice Gross on the day she disappeared.

The teenager has been missing since 28 August.

Builder Arnis Zalkalns has been missing since 03 September.

Issuing that appeal for Mr Zalkalns police had said that there was no evidence or suggestion that he had had any contact with Alice Gross, and only wanted to talk to him as it had been discovered he had travelled along the same route as the teenager schoolgirl on the day she was last seen.

Scotland Yard's Homicide and Major Crime Command has now presented more details of Mr Zalkalns; revealing that he was sentenced to seven years in prison in Latvia in 1998 for murder; and that he had been arrested in 2009 for indecently assaulting a 14-year-old girl in the Ealing area of west London. No further action was taken at that time.

It is understood that CCTV shows Mr Zalkalns cycling on Brentford Lock on 28 August at 16:00, 15 minutes after Alice Gross had walked the same route.

Police have said that Mr Zalkalns "potentially poses a risk to the public."

Anyone who sees Mr Zalkalns is asked to approach him but to immediately dial 999.
