Councils Given Powers To Cut Funding For 'Extremist' Nurseries

The Department of Education is to extend power to councils that will allow them to withdraw funding nurseries that have links to "extremism".

It follows a letter-writing campaign led by the British Humanist Association, which saw members writing to MPs in response to a nursery funding consultation.

It is understood that the association had raised concerns over extremist links and creationist teachings in some nurseries.

Announcing the move, Education Secretary Nicky Morgan said that schools and nurseries should teach "fundamental British values", and that those that didn't should not receive public funding.
