'Crossrail Of The North' Revealed

Five cities in the North of England have unveiled plans for for a new combined approach to improved transport systems.

Representatives of Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle and Sheffield have published the One North report, which lays out a £15bn, 15-year plan to offer better raid and rail links into and across the North of England.

Described as the "Crossrail of the North", the ambitious plans have won the support of Chancellor George Osborne, who said that the plan was "affordable".

Bank of England Governor Mervyn King has told the TUC conference in Manchester that financial firms and policymakers are to blame for the economic crisis. Addressing the conference, Mr King told delegates that they were "entitled to be angry" about the rise in unemployment and banks being bailed out with taxpayers money.

Teacher Strikes Continue At More Than 2,000 Schools
The UK's two largest teaching unions are on strike in a continuing dispute over pay, pensions and workloads. The strikes are affecting more than 2,000 schools in 49 authorities across England. It is the latest industrial action by members of the NUT and NASUWT in rolling regional strikes.
