UK Leaders Attended WWI Commemorations

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have joined around 50 heads of state in Belgium for an international ceremony to make the beginning of the First World War.

Prince William addressed the gathering in Liege, saying that they had gathered to salute those who died "to give us our freedom".

Meanwhile the Prince of Wales and the Prime Minister attended a service in Glasgow.

In the UK the international commemorations will close with a candle-lit vigil at Westminster Abbey along with a "lights out" event across the UK.

The public are encouraged to switch off their lights at 23:00 tonight – to mark the time that Britain declared war on Germany in 1914.
