Man's body thought to be that of missing weapons advisor

A man's body has been found which police say matches the appearance of the missing weapons expert thought to be the source for a controversial BBC story about the reliability of British intelligence over Iraq.

Dr David Kelly (59) disappeared from his Faringdon home, Oxfordshire, on Thursday afternoon, following a week of press attention. Dr Kelly, who worked as a Government advisor, had been pinpointed as the possible source for a BBC story which claimed that the Government had "sexed up" a dossier which outlined grounds for going to war against Iraq.

When Dr Kelly failed to return to his home on Thursday night, his family contacted the police. On Friday morning, a search team located a body which police describe as resembling Dr Kelly, in a location five miles from his house. If the body is formally identified as Dr Kelly, an independent judicial inquiry will be set up to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.

Dr Kelly has denied allegations of his role as the source of the BBC story, appearing before the Commons foreign affairs committee on Tuesday to answer questions about his role in the affair. However, he admitted talking to Andrew Gilligan, the BBC journalist behind the report.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence said: "We are aware that Dr David Kelly has gone missing and we are obviously concerned."
