Monet's 'Nympheas' Sells For £31.7m

Claude Monet's famous 1906 water lilies painting – Nympheas – has been sold at auction for £31.7m.

The painting, inspired by the lily pond at Monet's garden in Giverny, France, was sold at Sotheby's.

The piece was one of 46 other works featuring as part of the auction house's modern and impressionist works sale.

Philip Hook, from Sotheby's, is quoted as saying: "The Nympheas selling for such a huge sum is again a reflection that this is still a market that is driven by trophies, that the great works by the major masters are still really sought after."

The auction for the famous painting lasted for approximately 10 minutes, increasing in increments of £250,000 in its final stages.

It is understood the final sale price includes a buyer's premium.
