Additional Measures Announced To Meet High Passport Demand
The Home Secretary Theresa May has announced a series of additional measures to ensure people and families receive their passports in good time for their summer holidays.
Her Majesty's Passport Office (HMPO) is dealing with the highest demand for passports in 12 years and has issued over three million passports so far in 2014. Since January, HMPO has been putting steps in place to deal with the extra demand and the overwhelming majority of people continue to receive their new passports within three or four weeks.
However, recognising people's understandable concerns about delays, the Home Secretary said she is determined to do everything possible, while maintaining the security of the passport, to speed up the system.
Overseas applications
Overseas customers renewing an existing passport will be able to apply for it to be extended for 12 months. This will be done by consular staff in the country where they apply and appointments can be made from Monday 16 June. No additional fees will be charged and the security of the passport will not be affected.
Parents or guardians of children living overseas who wish to travel to the UK will be able to apply for an emergency travel document in place of a new or renewed passport for their children. This will be available from the week beginning 16th June in all British diplomatic posts that have access to the passport database, subject to checks to confirm nationality and identity.

Trainee pilot jailed on passport charges
A trainee British pilot was jailed for one year today on bogus passport charges. Zayead Christopher Hajaig, 36, from Ilford, Essex, was arrested when he returned from the US where he had sparked a terror alert by attempting to upgrade his pilot's licence while training in Atlanta where the 9/11 suicide bombers had trained as pilots.

Around 250 additional staff have been called into the Passport Office to try and alleviate a large backlog of passport allocations, it has been revealed. The announcement comes shortly after the UK Government denied there were problems with a backlog.

The Chancellor George Osborne is in Brussels to attend a meeting of EU finance ministers, to argue against the UK paying an additional £1.7 billion into the EU. The European Union has demanded that Britain pay an additional £1.7bn into the union, saying that the condition of the UK economy means that the government can pay more.

New Passport Design Hits Streets
The first new look UK passport has been issued today to five-year-old Elliot Coutts Miller. Elliot, who attends Shortwood Infant School, Staines in Surrey, received his passport at the London passport office based in Globe House in Victoria.
