Nick Clegg Opposes Fresh Action In Iraq
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has said he does not believe Western forces should provide military assistance in Iraq, after the US had said it was considering giving further assistance to fighting Islamist militants who have taken control of a large swathe of territory in eastern Syria and western and central Iraq.
The Liberal Democrat leader said the UK provided training and equipment to the country but rejected the idea of new military interventions there, which he described as "a very, very dangerous situation."
Mr Clegg said speaking about the 2003 war: "I don't think having made one mistake you repeat it by making a second one."
The Lib Dems opposed the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq.
The Sunni Muslim insurgents, led by an al-Qaeda offshoot called the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) have been gaining positions in different cities, Saddam Hussein's home town Tikrit among them.
The UN Security Council has condemned the attacks in Mosul and Tikrit and said the humanitarian situation around Mosul is "dire and worsening by the moment."

British soldier dies in Basrah helicopter crash
A British soldier has died after an RAF helicopter crashed in southern Iraq today. The MoD confirmed that the soldier was killed in "an accident" involving an RAF Puma helicopter at Basrah International Airport. Two other British military personnel were injured during the incident.

Liberal Democrat MP Norman Baker has said that working for the Home Secretary Theresa May was a "constant battle" and like "walking through mud". Mr Baker made the comments as he resigned from his post as a Home Office minister. He added that he felt Theresa May considered that she was in a "Conservative government with a few Lib Dems in it".

Iraq Attack Claims 250 Lives
Suicide truck bombings in Northern Iraq have claimed the lives of at least 250 Iraqis and officials warned the death toll could rise to 500. Suicide bombers drove five fuel tankers into two villages near Mosul, where members of the Yazidi religious sect live, which has been the target of Muslim extremists who believe the sect to be blasphemous.

Two suicide bomb attacks target Iraq police
In the worst attack by suicide bombers since the elections held last week, it is feared that at least 26 have been killed in two separate attacks. News agencies have reported that 14 were killed and tens of people wounded when a car bomb exploded outside a police station in Baquba.
