Emirates Cancels Order For 70 Airbuses

Dubai's Emirates Airline has cancelled a 2007 order for 70 of Airbus's A350 wide-bodied aircraft with deliveries due from 2019, following discussions over their 'fleet requirement review'.

The order included 50 Airbus A350-90 and 20 of the model A350-1000.

The UK engine maker Rolls-Royce said they are "disappointed" with the cancellation, which would lead to a £2.6bn hit to its order book, but they hope "that the delivery slots which start towards the end of this decade vacated by Emirates will be taken up by other airlines."

Airbus also said it is confident that new orders would compensate for the Emirates cancellation and affirmed that there is no "impact on the programme as deliveries were scheduled to start at the end of the decade."

In a statement, the company said it was "very confident" in its A350 XWB programme and added that it had 742 firm orders and expected the order book to continue growing, but it also recognised that Emirates had recently "reiterated its confidence in Airbus products, particularly by praising the A380" and it ordered an extra 50 A380 superjumbo planes at the last Dubai Air Show.

However, Emirates announced last year it had received an order of 150 of Boeing's 777X planes from Airbus' competitor at the Dubai Air Show.
