Work Starts On Devon Mine Excavation

Wolf Minerals, the Australian owners of Britain's new metal mine for more than four decades, has started work to excavate the site.

The Hemerdon tungsten mine will cost £130m to mine.

It is expected to start producing metal in 2015, and it is thought around 3,000 tonnes of tungsten and tin will be produced per year.

It is understood local people will be employed on the site.

Charlotte Wilkins, from Wolf Minerals, is quoted as saying: "The people here are largely local; we have a lot of people from Plymouth.

"Some of the skills involved in a project like this, the base isn't in this country. But the vast majority, especially the trades, are here."

Gary Streeter, Conservative MP for South West Devon, added that little protest had been voiced oer the mine.

He explained: "This part of Dartmoor has been mined for well over 100 years and the local community is aware of that - in fact, the local community is here because of that.

"While there have been some concerns about the environment, the overwhelming reaction from the local community was that we want the investment; we want the jobs."
