D-Day 70th Anniversary Begins

Hundreds of the surviving veterans of the D-Day landings on both sides of the English Channel are preparing to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the mission.

Princess Anne made an appearance at the drumhead ceremony in Portsmouth today, where exactly 70 years ago troops were preparing to invade Nazi-occupied France in a battle in which nearly 2,500 Allied troops lost their lives.

The Queen and other world leaders are to meet in Normandy on Friday to mark 6 June 1944, the day the mission began. A mass parachute drop will take place in Ranville, the first village to be liberated.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will also mark the D-Day anniversary during a state visit to France, where the Allied landing beaches are still known as Utah, Omaha, Juno, Gold and Sword, as well as their French names.

About 650 UK veterans are expected at the ceremony. The Queen will also head an international service of commemoration attended by royals, presidents and prime ministers.
