Three killed as train collides with minibus near Evesham
A collision between a train and a minibus at a level crossing near Evesham in Worcestershire has killed three people.
Emergency services said that seven other people, all in the minibus, were injured when the train struck the vehicle at Polls Crossing in Charlton, between Evesham and Pershore. Three of those injured were said to be in a serious condition.
It is understood that the accident occurred at a private unmanned crossing that serves a nearby farm. Drivers of vehicles are requested to seek permission before attempting to cross the tracks.
The three killed in the incident may have been fruit pickers who had travelled to the UK for the harvesting season.
It was reported that the train was not travelling at full speed at the time of the collision, as a one of the engines had earlier cut out and attempts to restart it at a station had apparently been unsuccessful.
The train, which suffered extensive damage at the front due to the impact, was moved further down the track to facilitate emergency services working at the scene.
First Great Western confirmed that the train was the 7.00 am Hereford to London Paddington service. No-one aboard the train was injured, though windows in a cariage were broken by the collision.
