Birmingham CPS 'Inadequate' For Fifth Year In A Row

Serious failures in the Birmingham's Children's Services department has seen it rated, for the fifth year in a row, as "inadequate" by Ofsted, which said the services are leaving young people at risk of harm.

Despite this, the watchdog has given to the department, which was first handed the rating in 2009, another three years to improve their services.

The inspection took place during three weeks between March and April 2014 and inspectors identified more than 400 cases of "serious weaknesses" in the authority's social care provision for young people .

The watchdog also found that some 145 cases were closed between October 2013 and January 2014 due to the lack of social workers. The regulator has ordered it to review them.

Birmingham City Council said it "accepted and welcomed" the inquiry and it was already working to address the issues raised.

Lord Norman Warner, who was appointed as an external commissioner to oversee the improvement by the Department for Education has written in a letter to the Education Secretary Michael Gove that Birmingham had: "started on the road to recovery, although there is still a long way to go" after failing children for a decade.
