M&S Annual Profits Fall For Third Year In A Row

High street retailer Marks and Spencer has revealed a drop in profits for the third consecutive year.

The retailer reported a 3.9% drop in its underlying annual pre-tax profit to £623m.

The chain also said that it sales rose by 2.7% to £10.3bn in the year to March 29.

While the companies like-for-like sales, which includes clothes and furnishings, were down 1.4% in the year, its like-for-like food sales in the same period were up 1.7%.

Chief executive Marc Bolland said: "We are focused on improving our performance in general merchandise and were pleased to see early signs of improvement."

ONS Figures Show Year-On-Year Increase In Retail Sales
New figures from the Office for National Statistics have revealed a 1.5% drop in retail sales in January, down from a pre-Christmas boost of 2.5% but still 4.4% up on January 2013. Comparing year-on-year figures for January there was an 8% increase in non-food sales, with sales of household good increasing by 9.

Sainsbury's Sales Up
Sainsbury's boss Justin King has said 'basic' ranges helped boost the supermarket's sales during the first quarter of this year. The firm reported sales in the fourth quarter of the financial year at stores open for at least a year rose 2.7%, or 6.2% excluding fuel.

ONS reports retail sales ‘restrained’
The latest three-monthly growth in retail sales volume was the highest since November 2004, the Office of National Statistics has reported. However, the report warned that the underlying trend appeared “restrained” and annual growth in sales volume fell to the lowest level for six years.

Halfords has reported a sales boost attributed to success in the Tour de France and Olympic cycling. Like-for-like bike sales excluding new stores soared by 14.7% in the three months to 28 September, and by 5.6% in the quarter, following a 5.6% fall in sales the previous quarter.

Profits at the up-market national retailer, Marks & Spencer have slumped. The company's 'bottom line' fell by around 6.1% in the three months up to September. The retailer's results have shown, for the first time, how the current squeeze on consumer spending-power is adversely affecting certain sectors of the high street.
