UK Slump In Romanian And Bulgarian Worker Migration
Nearly a 4,000 dip has been registered in the number of Romanian and Bulgarian workers in the UK since the employment restrictions were lifted in January but the figures are still up 20,000 compared with a year ago, according to the Office for National Statistics.
Official numbers show that 140,000 were employed in the UK between January and March 2014.
The figures shows the number of people employed in the UK by country of birth.
Meanwhile, the government has not revealed the number of new arrivals since the lifting of the temporary restrictions placed on Romanian and Bulgarian migrants when they joined the European Union in 2007.
Pressure group Migration Watch estimated the UK could expect about 50,000 arrivals a year from the two countries and the UK Independence Party predicted large numbers of new immigrants.
The chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander said the figures “gives the lie to UKIP's scaremongering on immigration", the UKIP's leader Nigel Farage said it shows "another huge increase" in foreign workers.
