Adams Presents Formal Complaint Over Arrest
Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams has made a formal complaint to the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) following his four days of questioning.
Mr Adams blamed his arrest and the attempt to charge him with IRA membership as a fact "damaging to the peace process".
Mr Adams, who was released from prison last Sunday night, was being detained in connection with the murder of the Belfast mother-of-ten Jean McConville. However, he has always denied any involvement in the 1972 murder.
Writing for The Guardian newspaper Mr Adams said: "Over the following four days it became clear that the objective was to get to the point where they could charge me with IRA membership and thereby link me to the McConville case, the membership charge was clearly their principal goal."
Mr Adams also said his arrest was an assault on the peace process and the attempt to charge him was damaging for the peace and the political institutions.
He confirmed no new evidential material was produced during the questioning and made a formal complaint.
