Virgin Soldiers Author Leslie Thomas Dies

Journalist and novelist Leslie Thomas, best known for his national service novel The Virgin Soldiers, has died aged 83.

He was surrounded by family and friends at his Salisbury home in Wiltshire on Tuesday after battling a long illness.

His wife Diana said: "He had a wonderful life and he travelled the world. All he ever wanted to do was write and that is what he did."

The author was given an OBE in 2004 due his services to literature after sold millions of books along the world.

Mr Thomas wrote over 30 novels as a journalist.

He leaves behind his wife, four children and four grandchildren.

Birmingham Children Service Could Be Handed Off If Improvements Not Made
Ofsted inspectors have warned that should the standard of children services in Birmingham not improve, the service will be handed over to the Department for Education. It is understood that Ofsted will inspect the services again later this month and if improvements are not made the department will take over before Christmas.

Funeral Held For Blackpool Victim Of MH17 Air Crash
The funeral has taken place of Glenn Thomas, who died in the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 air crash. Mr Thomas (49), from Blackpool, was one of 298 people who died in July when the flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was brought down over northern Ukraine. He was buried in a humanist service at Lowther Pavilion in Lytham.
